Lab Members

Masanori Hayashi, MD
Principal Investigator
Dr. Masanori Hayashi is a pediatric oncologist physician scientist at the University of Colorado/Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Hayashi is a graduate of Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo and completed his pediatric residency training at Duke University, followed by his pediatric hematology/oncology training at the joint program of Johns Hopkins University and the National Cancer Institute. During his fellowship, Dr. Hayashi joined the laboratory of Dr. David Loeb at Johns Hopkins University where he studied liquid biopsy techniques for pediatric sarcoma patients using ctDNA and circulating tumor cells, as well as studying the contribution of Wnt signaling to sarcoma metastasis. He joined the faculty at Children’s Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado in 2017, where he splits his time studying pediatric sarcoma biology in the lab, and taking care of pediatric sarcoma patients in the hospital.
When Mas is not busy in the lab or in clinic, he likes to spend time with his family, or sneak in some time to play hockey or golf.

Ryota Shirai, MD, PhD
Post-Doctoral Research Fellow
Dr. Shirai is a pediatric oncologist, who is a graduate of Hirosaki University School of Medicine in Aomori Japan. He earned his PhD from the Graduate School of Medical Life Science, Yokohama City University, and also trained at the National Center for Child Health and Development in Tokyo where he studied the function of SMARCB1 in malignant rhabdoid tumors prior to joining the Hayashi lab.
Outside of the lab, he enjoys spending time with his family, and enjoying the beautiful outdoors of Colorado.

Sydney Hakim, BS
Research Services Professional

Joshua Broadman, MD
Sydney Hakim is a Research Services Entry Professional at the University of Colorado. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2023. Prior to joining the Hayashi lab, she gained experience in a wide variety of fields, including animal necropsy and sample processing, laboratory animal care, wildlife rehabilitation, and veterinary clinical work. She joined the Hayashi lab in 2024. Outside of the lab, Sydney enjoys crafting, thrift shopping, and baking.
Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellow
Dr. Josh Broadman is a pediatric hematology-oncology fellow and aspiring physician-scientist at the University of Colorado and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Broadman earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Health Sciences and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. He is currently completing subspecialty training in pediatric hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplantation at the University of Colorado.
Prior to medicine, Dr. Broadman completed a Master’s degree in clinical exercise and respiratory physiology at McGill University, where his thesis focused on ventilatory efficiency and neural respiratory drive during induced metabolic alkalosis. This early interest in human performance and physiologic adaptation evolved into a clinical and research focus on pediatric cancer survivorship, immunotherapy, and mental health. During fellowship, Dr. Broadman joined the Hayashi Lab to develop T cell–based immunotherapies for pediatric solid tumors, with a specific focus on Ewing sarcoma. His work involves preclinical development of CAR T cells targeting TSPAN8, a surface protein highly expressed on both primary and circulating tumor cells, with the aim of intercepting metastatic relapse.
Dr. Broadman’s academic interests span, CAR T-cell therapy, resident-physician simulation, psychosocial oncology, and improving health literacy through digital tools. Outside the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, skiing, producing music, and playing ultimate frisbee.
